I’ve been thinking about how the 80/20 rule applies to safety management — and it’s become core to our approach with clients.

One of the biggest mistakes in EHS is assuming every issue deserves the same level of attention. It doesn’t.

The goal isn’t to identify and close as many findings as possible. The goal is to determine:
→ Which risks have the greatest potential consequence?
→ Which weaknesses create the greatest exposure?
→ Which improvements will produce the greatest reduction in risk?

Imagine identifying 100 safety deficiencies. You could spend months working through all of them — or identify the 10-20 that represent the greatest potential for:

• Serious injury or fatality
• Catastrophic system failure
• Major asset damage
• Operational disruption
• Environmental impact
• Regulatory exposure

Then concentrate your resources there.

That doesn’t mean the other 80% don’t matter. It means they shouldn’t get the same time, resources, leadership attention, or capital investment.

20% of the risk landscape → 80% of the risk reduction opportunity.

This is the question we bring to every client engagement. Instead of “How do we fix everything?” we ask:

“If we could only fix five things this quarter, which five would reduce the most risk?”

That’s where risk-based safety management becomes powerful. It’s also how we help clients shift EHS away from being activity-driven —

“How many inspections did we complete?”
“How many observations did we close?”
“How many trainings did we conduct?”

and toward being risk-driven:

“What are our highest-consequence failure modes?”
“Where are our critical controls weakest?”
“What could cause a catastrophic event?”
“Which intervention will have the greatest impact?”

Effective safety management isn’t about managing everything equally. It’s about managing risk intelligently. This is the lens iErgoFit brings to every safety assessment.
