EHS Should Be Involved Throughout the Electrical System Lifecycle
When should EHS become involved in a major electrical project?
Too often, it is near the end.
The electrical system has been designed, equipment selected, switchgear ordered, installation completed, and energization is approaching. EHS is then asked to develop procedures, review PPE requirements, or prepare employees to work around the equipment.
But many of the decisions determining future worker exposure were made months—or years—earlier.
A better approach is to involve EHS throughout the electrical system lifecycle:
Product Selection → Design → Installation → Commissioning & Energization → Operations → Maintenance
EHS does not replace electrical engineering or qualified electrical professionals. Instead, EHS connects engineering decisions to the people who will eventually interact with the equipment.
A disconnect location designed today becomes a Lockout/Tagout decision tomorrow. Equipment spacing becomes maintenance access. System redundancy can become a backfeed hazard. Equipment configuration can influence future arc-flash exposure.
This is why electrical safety cannot begin with PPE.
Organizations should be asking much earlier: Can this equipment be safely isolated? Can workers verify absence of voltage? What stored energy remains after shutdown? Can maintenance be performed without unnecessary energized exposure? What happens when equipment fails?
These questions are particularly important in high-energy environments such as data centers, AI infrastructure, manufacturing facilities, utilities, and other complex industrial operations.
The goal should not simply be an electrical installation that works.
The goal should be an electrical system that can be safely installed, energized, operated, isolated, maintained, modified, and eventually decommissioned.
EHS should help connect those stages.
Because the best opportunity to control an electrical hazard may occur long before a worker ever opens an electrical enclosure.
Electrical safety starts at the design table.
